Wisconsin Rapids, WI: The Assumption girls basketball team welcomed in the Prentice Buccaneers for a Marawood Conference crossover match up on Friday February 1st. The Royals were able to walk out with a 58-44 victory despite a near six minute scoring drought in the second half.
Prentice began the game hitting back-to-back threes to open up an early lead on the Royals, but the Royals were able to tie the game at nine come the 13 minute mark of the first half. The Royals went on an 8-0 run in a span of three minutes thanks to senior guard Grace Crowns capping the run off with an open three from the corner.
The Royals went on to stretch the lead to 23-12 with eight minutes and 45 seconds remaining in the first half when senior guard Elle Leberg would make a turn-around post-shot that was assisted by Crowns. After Prentice hit a three to cut the lead to 23-15, sophomore guard Kendall Schmidt got a steal, and went on to score a fast-break lay-up to push the Royals lead to 25-15.
The Royals went into halftime with a 39-27 lead thanks to stellar defense and balanced scoring from the team.
When the second half began, Prentice continued to struggle against the Royals defense. Prentice started the half 2/7 in the first eight minutes, which helped the Royals jump out to a 13-4 run in that span. Junior forward Madalyn Bohn sparked the run by draining a three from the top of the key with ten minutes and 23 seconds remaining in the first half, then Bohn went on to hit a turn-around jumper inside the post to push the Royals lead to 52-31 with nine minutes and 23 seconds remaining in the game.
From that point on, the Royals went on a five minute and 52 second scoring drought, but Prentice couldn’t solve the Royals defense either within that time frame and could only get as close as 14 in that span. Prentice was only able to make 5 out of 17 free-throws which proved to be the difference at the end of the game.
“The girls were fighting for some energy in the first half,” said head coach Ryan Klein of the Assumption Royals. “The lay-off from practices with the bad weather that was going was evident in the second half, but we grinded to jump out to an early lead in the game, and the girls kept fighting to hold on to a victory tonight on our home court.”
The Royals now shift their attention to Wausau Newman come Tuesday night, and Ryan Klein said, “The girls are looking forward to that game. We will focus on limiting our turnovers come Tuesday, and hope we can come out on top.”
The Royals now improve their conference record to 10-3 in the Marawood South, and currently sit at 15-4 overall.
