Abbotsford— A game that saw 5 first half ties and lead changes saw Abbotsford build up a second half lead and hang on to down Marathon, 58-50.

Abbotsford began the game on fire, taking a 15-5 lead 8 minutes into the game before Marathon steadily fought back.

Just over minutes later, the Red Raiders tied the game at 18 on a Bradyn Free put-back. Liz Boehm’s basket on Marathon’s next possession put Marathon on top.

The Falcons took the lead for good at 27-26 when Mel Kunze scored with 50 seconds left in the half, one of 5 blocks she had on the game.

Kunze was Abbotsford’s leading scorer with 15 points, and had a game-high 8 blocks.

Abbotsford held a 29-26 lead at halftime, and Abbotsford Head Coach Logan Rosemeyer knew the Falcons had some work to do in the second half to shut down Marathon.

“In the second half, we had to a better job of communicating defensively,” Rosemeyer explained.

Marathon pulled to within one at 31-30 four minutes into the second half, but then it was the Abbotsford offense that kicked into another gear. A 12-3 run  that spanned six minutes was capped by a Kallie Falteisek three pointer.

Falteisek had 10 points and led Abbotsford with 5 assists.

The Falcons’ point guard then picked up her fourth foul, however, and Marathon slowly clawed back.

With 19 seconds left, Marathon pulled to within four, but then fundamentals took over for Abbotsford.

Melanie Kunze and Falteisek each strolled to the foul line and drained a pair of free throws to seal the win, and Abbotsford gained momentum heading into a busy final week.

“As long as we have either Kallie or Mel on the floor, we can get some things going offensively, so it was good we could stagger when they were in foul trouble down the stretch,” said Rosemeyer.

Abbotsford has four games in the final week, and Rosemeyer points out that the Falcons have an important week ahead of them.

“It will be interesting to see how things shake out this final week. We hope to build on our momentum,” Rosemeyer shared.

Marathon was led by Boehm’s 16 points. Allison Wokatsch added 13 points for the Red Raiders.

Catie Clement led Abbotsford with 9 rebounds.
