Black River Falls-–
The Black River Falls Tiger hockey team began the New Year with two back to back games Fri/Sat and finished 0-1-1. The Tigers visited Middleton (Metro Lynx) Friday night for a late 8PM game and although played a very lackluster first period went into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead behind strong goaltending from Josie Mathison.
The lone first period goal was scored by Savannah Holcomb with a wrist shot from the slot area off passes from Lexie Hagen and Natalie Rave. The Tigers played a much improved second period, with significant puck possession time but were unable to add to the lead and clung to the 1-0 score after two periods of play. The Tigers extended the lead to 2-0 when Hagen scored off a turnover situation with an assist going to Holcomb. The lead was short lived as the Lynx responded with two goals only several seconds apart mid third period to tie the score. Both goals came from unfortunate bounces of the puck.
The game was tightly contested the rest of the way and through the over time period with both teams having some quality scoring chances and solid goal tending on both ends of the ice. The final remained knotted at 2.
Saturday’s game had the Tigers playing host to #2 ranked Central Wisconsin Storm who largely controlled play throughout the game enjoying a 44-8 shot margin. The Tigers began the game competing well and then the Storm converted on two consecutive rushes about 11 minutes into the period and began to control play from there on out.
Mathison was strong in net with 39 saves on the 44 shots. The Tigers were moved to section 2 for the girls HS playoffs which is a section often won by the Storm in recent years. The Tigers will go to work with a goal of gaining a rematch opportunity in the playoffs.
