Wausau– The Newman boys basketball team came up with a big win on Monday as they toppled Wisconsin Valley Lutheran by the final score of 66-62.

Newman’s Charlie McCarty, who is a CWS Athlete of the Week candidate, scored 28 points to lead the Cardinals. He also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Ben Leischer added 16 points for Newman.

The Cardinals took a 30-27 lead into halftime and held a one point advantage in the second half.

Wisconsin Valley Lutheran shot 55% from the floor and made 13-18 free throw attempts.

“Every time we made a run to get a nice lead they kept battling back, so we have  to give them credit,” said Newman coach Daniel Garrett. “I like that our team was able to finish this game hitting free throws late to seal it.  I am happy with the win. We now need to get ready for Marathon Friday night.”
