Auburndale– The Newman boys basketball team played Auburndale tough in the first half of their Marawood South match up on Tuesday night, but fell by the final score of 79-65.
The Cardinals committed 24 turnovers, which was a major contributor to their inability to hang with the Apaches in the second half.
“I was proud of our effort tonight,” said Newman coach Dan Garrett. “We fought hard and played well most of the night. We just couldn’t overcome turnovers tonight. Against a good team like Auburndale on their home court we needed to do a better job taking care of the ball and rebounding.”
Charlie McCarty was a spark plug for Newman, scoring a career high 21 points and also grabbing 13 rebounds.
Ben Leischer scored 16 points for the Cardinals.
Newman Scoring: McCarty 21, Leischer 16, Samuels 8, Kimball 7, Ende 6, Lang 3, Zeimetz 2, Shields 2
