WISCONSIN RAPIDS- In a game that featured five lead changes and two ties, the Plover and Wisconsin Rapids American Legion Baseball teams were locked in a battle where both teams seemed to have an answer.

But with two outs in the top of the eighth, the Black Sox got the decisive run on a single by Brett Ehr that plated Mike Glodosky as Plover knocked off the Rangers 8-7 Monday night at Witter Field.

“Rapids is a solid team and it’s nice to get the win on the road,” Plover coach Wayne Sankey said. “We still have a shot at the league title, and this was the first rung on the ladder to get it.”

With two outs in the top of the eighth, Glodosky reached on the first of three consecutive singles for Plover. Cam Stampfl followed suit with a single up the first base line to put two on with two out setting the stage for Ehr.

There was only one inning where neither team tallied a run- the seventh- but it was the Rangers who nearly brought home with win in their half of the sixth inning.

Trailing 7-6 , Rapids got a lead-off double by Jack Wenzel to get things rolling. Jake Mancl followed with a walk, and after a wild pitch advanced the runners up a base, Wenzel scored and on an error by the Plover catcher, Mancl was able to move to third base with no one out.

It was then that the Rangers came upon some hard luck where Nate Krommenakker lined out to third base where Mancl narrowly avoided being tagged for a double play, but with the next batter, Caleb Krommenakker lined to second but this time Mancl was unable to get back to the base on time and was tagged out to complete the double play and end the Rapids threat.

“Back to back line drives right to guys is tough,” Rapids coach Cort Halbur said. “It wasn’t bad base running; the guys were moving on instinct, but Plover made great plays and got the outs.”

For the game, Plover was led at the plate by Stampfl, Derek Baumgartner, and Mason King who all notched a pair of hits, while the Rangers were paced by Caleb Krommenakker who went 3-4 and scored a pair of runs. Donovan Brandl, Josh Zwicke, and Cody Bredl each chipped in with a pair of hits.
