Green Bay— The WIAA Girls Basketball 3 Point Challenge saw 10 top three point shooters from throughout the state vie for the title, and when the dust settled, Grafton’s Hannah Belanger came back in the finals to edge Tri-County’s Brooke Hopkins, 15-14.

In the opening round, Mackenzie Correll of Northwestern started things out with a bang, scoring 22 points, the highest of any competitor in any round. Belanger had 15 points in round 1, and was joined in the semifinals by Hopkins(18) and Laijanique Perry-Ellis of Milwaukee Washington(14).

Round two saw Hopkins net 18 points and Belanger 16 points to advance to the finals. Hopkins vaulted into the finals with a clutch performance on her last set of shots from the baseline, making her final four shots.

With the most points in round two, Hopkins chose to go first, and she was on fire right off the bat. Hopkins made her first five attempts but then went cold, and her struggles looked like her score would be quite low. She came through in the end, however, draining four of five from the baseline as time wound down, giving her 14 points.

Hopkins’ lead looked like it would prove to give her the title, as she led 14-9 as Belanger slid over for her final five attempts. When Belanger made her first four, she trailed 14-13, with the outcome riding on the final shot. Belanger drained the ‘Money Ball’ from the corner to give her the title, 15-14.

Colby’s Carley Elmhorst was the ninth competitor, scoring four points in the opening round. Participating in the contest was a little nerve-wracking, Elmhorst said.

“I’m not sure what happened, but I was a little nervous. I tried to stay calm but I got a little rushed, knowing we had the one minute to shoot.”

Colby fans turned out in droves, as teammates, fans, friends, and family took the drive to Green Bay in support of Elmhorst.

“Even though I didn’t win, I definitely had the biggest cheering section. It was really awesome, seeing all of the fans excited to be here,” Elmhorst proudly shared.
