Thorp— The Thorp Cardinals celebrated their senior night on Tuesday night in their Cloverbelt Conference Crossover match with Greenwood in dramatic fashion. After victories by the JV and C-Team squads, the Thorp underclassmen recognized the accomplishments and character of the seven Cardinal seniors before the start of the varsity match-up with the visiting Indians. This was just the start of an exciting evening as the Cardinals defeated the Indians three games to one 25-12, 25-11, 22-25, 25-13.
The anticipation grew throughout the first match as Senior outside hitter Paige Mertens approached her 1,000th kill of her career.Coming into the match Paige needed 13 kills on the night to reach the mark. After recording 23 kills in her previous match last week, the night seemed primed for her to accomplish this milestone mark.
After eight crushing kills in the first set, the stage was set and the countdown began with the Cardinal bench and the lively packed bleachers. The student section prepared the posters and signs and became excited with every set to the first-team all-conference outside hitter. And she did not disappoint. Paige ripped her kills down the line, up the middle, from the back row and finally from her left hitter spot smack down in the middle of the court to achieve her mark….and the crowd went crazy!
To top it off, her kills were courtesy of the great sets by her honorable mention all-conference setter, fellow senior, and friend Raleigh Frankewicz. A time-out was taken to acknowledge this momentous occasion and appreciate the hard work, effort, and time it took to reach this goal. A special thank you to all of Paige’s teammates and specifically her fellow seniors on this special night. Paige will go down as the record holder for most kills in a career for the Thorp High School Volleyball Program.
For the match, Mertens finished with 20 kills and 7/7 serving, Frankewicz with 40 assists and a perfect 15/15 serving night, Senior Madisyn Greschner with 8 kills, Senior Kasey Mosiewicz with 6 kills and 6 ace serves, 3 solo blocks, Senior Morgan Barth with 6 kills, 3 blocks and 14/15 serving, and Alandra Teclaw with 4 kills, and 10/11 serving. The night was also made complete by the great passing of juniors Cassidy Stroinski and Courtney Frankewicz and some amazing digs by Greschner. The Cardinals now prepare for the playoffs and another East Cloverbelt Conference team in the Colby Hornets.
