WISCONSIN RAPIDS- After having less-than-desired success the last time he faced Marathon, Assumption pitcher Ethan Peters wanted to have a better performance when he faced the Raiders Monday afternoon.
After the game, it was hard to argue things could have been better.
Peters was on top of his game as he allowed just two walks in the first inning and cruised to a complete-game no hitter victory as the Royals rolled past Marathon 11-0 in Marawood Conference South-Division action at Witter Field.
Marathon edged the Royals on April 28 by a 7-6 margin where they knocked around Peters en route to the victory.
Peters just faced two over the minimum number of batters in the five-inning contest and retired 14 straight Raiders with six strikeouts, including the final out of the game.
“I’ve never pitched a game like this before,” Peters said. “It feels really good, and especially to do it against Marathon.”
The game didn’t start ideally for Peters when he gave up a lead-off walk to Mitchell Kurtz and a one out walk to Carter Hanke, but from that point forward, the Raiders never threatened.
Aside from Peters’ dominance on the mound, the Royals defense was equally up to the task.
Second baseman, Tyler Schmidt made a diving grab to record the first out in the fourth inning. While in the fifth, first basemen Brandon Birkhauser made a sprinting catch in foul territory for the first out while left fielder Trevor Newton made a ranging grab in shallow left-center field for the second out.
“There is no way I could have done this tonight without the defense,” Peters said. “There was also good support at the plate, and you just can’t win without runs.”
As dominant as the Royals were defensively, they were equally as impressive in their at bats as they pounded out 11 runs on 11 hits and took advantage of 5 Marathon runs.
Assumption jumped out to a fast 8-0 after the first inning which saw 12 Royals come to the plate.
Leading Assumption at the plate was Brandon Birkhauser who went 3-3 with a pair of RBIs and scored twice. Senior Zach Krings went 2-2 with a single and double and tallied a pair of RBIs.
“Ethan has great potential and threw the ball the best he has all year,” Assumption coach Ryan Hartman said. “We’ve just been focusing on our defense and the hits will fall sooner or later and they did tonight.”
