Wisconsin Rapids– For Assumption softball player, senior Ellie Schill, Friday was the day she set her future plans in motion.
In front of her friends, teammates, and with her parents, Rob and Linda, by her side, Ellie signed her letter of intent to play softball at Division III Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.
Schill, a center fielder and two-time unanimous all-Marawood Conference selection, is the second Royal softball player to make plans post-high school to continue her playing career.
“I’ve coached her since she was seven years old and she has grown as a player so much in the last four years,” Assumption co-coach Charlie Nelson said. “She is a good player for us, and she will be a good player for Loras.”
One could say that it was a choice for Ellie to choose Loras College, but due to some life-events, it appeared to be destiny.
During the recruiting process, Ellie was scheduled to visit St. Norbert College, but on the day she was to arrive, her grandfather passed away. It was also the day that she was accepted to Loras College- the college her grandfather attended so it just seemed as though it was meant for her to go there.
“I just followed my gut, and because of my grandpa, I decided here,” Schill said. “I liked the campus, it had a home-like feel.”
Schill is expected to be an anchor for the Royals this season. The Royals return seven players from last year’s squad that finished 20-1 and appeared in the sectional semifinals. Those seven players all earned Marawood Conference honors in one way or another.
With so much positivity around the team, and the potential for another strong season, Schill is optimistic about her final year in high school.
“I’m excited for what this season has in store,” Schill said. “We can’t overlook any teams. We have to work hard, and hopefully we’ll have our best season yet.”
