Wisconsin Rapids– The headline from week 7 in the VFA-South would have to be Menasha’s defeat of Marshfield. the Bluejays built up a big lead and never looked back against one of the best teams in the conference. Meanwhile, SPASH wrestled control of the conference lead with a hard-fought win over Wisconsin Rapids. SPASH now controls its own destiny going into the last game of the regular season. A win over Marshfield would give the Panthers an undefeated conference record and its first ever VFA-South title. Marshfield will be fighting for a share of the conference title. The central Wisconsin football community will be watching to see how things shake out between SPASH and Marshfield in Marshfield on Friday night.
Week 7 Results
Menahsa 42, Marshfield 7. What a win for Menasha. The Bluejays jumped out to a 21-0 lead at halftime and only gave up one third quarter score to the then-undefeated Tigers. Menasha got three rushing touchdowns from Tyler Korth. Marshfield will look to rebound at home this week against SPASH.
Fond du Lac 41, Oshkosh West 27. Nice win by Fondy against a dangerous team in Oshkosh West.
Stevens Point 21, Wisconsin Rapids 19. This game went right down to the wire, as you might expect in a rivalry game as intense as this one is. Zach Pozorski led the Panthers with 110 rushing yards. Rapids scored a touchdown with 2:21 in the fourth quarter and drove into SPASH territory in the closing seconds, but ultimately fell short. Give SPASH credit for making some stellar defensive plays, including a decisive safety in the third quarter to swing momentum to SPASH’s sideline.
Oshkosh North 42 Neenah 7. If you haven’t seen Nate Neveau play quarterback for Oshkosh North, you have missed out. The kid is electric. Neveau scored four touchdowns in North’s route of Neenah.
Standings
1. Stevens Point 6-0 (7-0). Survived Rapids, clinched a share of conference title.
2. Marshfield 5-1 (6-1). Still has shot at title Friday night at home.
3. Menasha 4-2 (5-2). Big, big win Friday night.
4. Oshkosh North 3-3 (3-4). Poured it on Friday night.
5. Fond du Lac 2-4 (3-4). Fondy tough this season.
5. Oshkosh West 2-4 (2-5). Looking for a 9th game opponent.
5. Wisconsin Rapids 2-4 (2-5). Could just as easily be 7-0.
8. Neenah 0-6 (0-7). Tough season.
Week 8 Schedule
Stevens Point at Marshfield. Game of the week. I’m not so bold as to guess who might win this one. Marshfield has pulled out a couple of very close games this year. Playing at home, with a share of the conference title on the line, look for the Tigers to come out with some fire. The significance of this game is not lost on SPASH, who would like nothing more than to come out of this game with sole possession of first place in the conference.
Neenah at Wisconsin Rapids. Pink game. Neenah played SPASH extremely tough two weeks ago, but seems to have lost that momentum in a blow out loss to Oshkosh North last week. Rapids has had to endure a number of close games this year. Being at home, and using the Pink Game as motivation, look for Rapids to play lights out on Friday night.
Menahsa at Fond du Lac. This is an interesting game. Menasha will have to guard against a let down after upsetting Marshfield.
Oshkosh West at Oshkosh North. My money is on Nate Neveau– I don’t care who North is playing. Neveau is the difference maker when he steps onto the field.
