Weston– The SPASH Panthers volleyball team came into their sectional semifinal matchup as underdogs, facing a Merrill team that won the Valley Conference title with a tidy 11-1 record. The Bluejays proved to be too much for the Panthers to handle on Thursday night as SPASH fell 3-1. With the win, Merrill advances to the sectional final where they will have a chance to punch their ticket to state when they face Marshfield, who beat Eau Claire North in fours sets Thursday night. The sectional final game will take place at Wausau East on Saturday.
SPASH pushed the Bluejays in the first set, but ultimately lost 26-24. Merrill took the control of the match by winning the second set 25-16, but SPASH fought back for a victory in the third. The Bluejays battled for a win in the fourth and final set 25-16 to claim the victory.
SPASH was led in kills by Nicki Hauser (15) and Molly Williams (14).
Dani Brzezinski had 37 assists for the Panthers.
SPASH finishes their season with a record of 30-11.
“We have had an impressive second half of our season and we prepared well for this game,” said SPASH head coach Julie Johnson. ”Unfortunately ,when it came down to executing consistently we made too many errors. Against a team like Merrill, you can’t afford to do this and ultimately this is what cost us. The loss is hard to take, but I am extremely proud of my team and their effort throughout the entire season.”
