Stevens Point–For a second week in a row, The Store’s “Orange Crush” put on an excellent show for their fans. Fantastic blocking in the middle by Joe Berquist, Evan Thomas and Travis Wilkinson opened up wide holes for fullback JD Schultz to drive downfield for a first possession touchdown. Later, tailback Brett Berens broke one open for a 30 yard touchdown run around the left side with great blocking from left end Isaiah Fish. Justin Groshek’s stellar performance on defense and special teams resulted in an interception, a fantastic open-field tackle and a 42-yard punt return for a touchdown. This week’s hardware went to Travis Wilkinson who received the “Hit Man Award’ for solid hitting and numerous pancake blocks. “Mr. Offense” went to JD Schultz for leading his team in total yards gained. Taylor Sankey’s exceptional performance as a first-year quarterback earned him the ”100% Award” and the “Coach’s Award” went to Hunter Squier for his remarkable versatility and effort on both sides of the ball.
The 5/6 Lions also had a great Saturday of football. 8 runners combined for 199 yards on 32 carries with 2 TDs (12 out of the 13 eligible players have now carried the ball). There was a definite ‘tale of two teams’ to the Lions as the second half was a stellar performance. Braden Christophersen hit Kristopher “K-K” Ysquidero for a touchdown pass for fifty yards on a post route. Ysquidero also had three rushes for 21 yards and another rushing touchdown. Desmond Schommer had 53 yards on eleven touches and Christophersen added to the rally by punching one in on his own on a QB option run to the outside giving him fifty eight rushes on two carries for the day. Defensively, the Lions had a few schematic breakdowns, but had a solid outing especially in the second half that Coach Chrisophersen called ‘swarming.’ The defense really stepped it up from some of the team leaders including Jaylen Gassman at left defensive end who had six tackles including two tackle for losses (TFL). Christophersen had six tackles of his own. Jackson Gutzdorf plowed down five tackles as did Austin Stankowski, who had two touchdown-saving tackles. Stankowski said, “Coach Shane and our angle of pursuit drill really helped with those, I knew exactly where to head as soon as I saw the runner going down the sideline.” Stankowski, not a speedster by any means is a savy hard nose player. Schommer and Ethan Kane also had five key tackles and Kane was the savior of the day by being 3 for 3 on extra points. The Powerade players of the game went to Christophersen, Gassman, Ysquidero, and Kane.
Week 2 action in the 5th-6th grade lightweight division saw the Point Sports Medicine Wildcats start slowly in the first quarter, but managed to get the offense going in the second quarter and second half. Offensive touchdowns were scored on a nice run by running back Mitchell Anderson, a quarterback keeper around the end by Justin Morton and a twenty yard connection between quarterback Justin Morton and Wide Receiver Brenden Klish. The defense picked up the intensity in the second half and had some great individual efforts from defensive ends Justin Morton and Blake Milkowski. Justin made a key stop on a 4th down attempt. Blake had a fumble recovery that stopped a drive by an opponent as well. Justin was named Mr. Defense for his efforts and Mitchell was named Mr. Offense for his hard running.
