Stevens Point- - The Stevens Point Area Senior High volleyball team made quick work of Wisconsin Rapids in a 3-0 win in a Wisconsin Valley Conference match Thursday night at the SPASH Fieldhouse.
The Panthers took advantage of a fast start going up 16-0 in the opening game.
Wisconsin Rapids head coach Jake Wendtland admitted that his squad had a tough time recovering from the early deficit.
“Volleyball is about having lots of good, short-term memory,” Wendtland said. “You have to forget about that last point and get on to the next one and we decided to dwell on those first few points and we never dug out of it.”
SPASH cruised to take the game 25-6.
The Panthers kept on rolling to complete the sweep, winning the final two games by scores of 25-10 and 25-14.
SPASH head coach Julie Johnson was pleased with her team’s effort on all fronts.
We pretty much did everything well tonight,” Johnson said. “We took them completely out of their game. “
With the win, the Panthers improve to 3-3 in WVC play, while the Raiders fall to 1-5.
Thursday night also marked the 2nd annual “Diggin’ the Cause,” match that sought to raise breast cancer awareness as well as funds for local breast cancer patients.
Though Johnson was thrilled to be a part of the event, she was not about to take all of the credit.
“There is an incredible group of parents behind the scenes doing this,” Johnson said. “Everything you see is thanks to that group of parents.”
Coming into the night, the program hoped to raise $7,500 through raffles and other special fundraisers. Regardless of the monetary outcome, Johnson was happy to be part of the event.
“It’s so rewarding to see this happen. It’s exciting, it really is,” Johnson said. “I’m excited to see what the final number is.”
