Stevens Point– The SPASH girls cross country team turned in a strong performance at the SPASH invitational on Saturday, claiming first place in in the varsity and JV races, respectively. On the varsity level, SPASH’s top five runners combined for a 1:20:00.5 time to best second place Beaver Dam (1:20:50:1) and third place DC Everest (1:22:40:9).
Head coach Mike Olson was pleased with his team’s performance.
“This was a great meet for us,” Olson said. ”On varsity, we were able to beat our arch rivals Wausau West and DC Everest. This was our best team effort in a while.”
Olson said that freshman Autumn Schurbert-Hetzel ran a particularly solid race for SPASH. Schurbert-Hetzel finished second overall with a time of 15:28:7.
“Autumn ran an outstanding race,” Olson said. ”Overall, I’m very pleased with the race today.”
Hannah Beilke, a sophomore, placed sixth overall with a time of 15:44.
Meanwhile, the SPASH boys varsity team also finished in first place, beating out Baraboo (2nd) and Wausau East (3rd). Sam Anderson (16:18.9), Evan Hatton (16:35.6), Michael Larson (16:37.5) and Sam Sheibley (16:46.7) finished first through fourth, respectively, to pace SPASH.

- 1st Place SPASH (top 5 times 1:20:00.5): 2nd: Autum Shurbert-Hetzel 15:28.7, 6th: Hannah Beilke 15:44.0, 10th: Mckenzie Taggatz 16:00.5, 14th: Abbey Hyland 16:18.5, Place 19/Score 18: Sarah Rosenthal 16:28.7.
- 2nd Place Beaver Dam (1:20:50.1): with the top 5 finishers in 4, 5, 8, 21 and 30
- 3rd DC Everest (1:22:40.9): with the top 5 finishers in 7, 20, 23, 24 and 27
- 1st Place SPASH (top five times 1:23:19.5): 1st Sam Anderson (16:18.9), 2nd Evan Hatton (16:35.6), 3rd Michael Larson (16:37.5), 4th Sam Sheibley (16:46.7), 8th Derek Cruise (17.\:00.7)
- 2nd Place Baraboo (1:26:15.9): top 5 finishers 6, 9, 12, 13, 21.
- 3rd Place Wausau East (1:29:36.4): top five finishers 14, 22, 30, 33, 35.
