Wausau– It wasn’t exactly the result that the result that the Wisconsin Rapids Red Raiders boys soccer team was hoping for, but Rapids tied the Wisconsin Valley Conference leading Wausau East Lumberjacks 1-1 in double overtime on Thursday night.
Rapids slips to 5-2-3 in Valley Conference play, while Wausau East holds on to the conference lead at 8-2-1.
In their first meeting of the season, East whipped Rapids for a 3-1 victory in Wisconsin Rapids. So while a tie is never as good as an outright victory, Rapids can take some solace in the fact that they battled East to the end without yielding.
“We were sound on defense and played tough the whole time and that’s what kept in the game for 100 minutes,” said Rapids’ Matt Hepp. “We didn’t play very offense-oriented, but got our chance and took advantage of it. They just got one free kick and we broke down which let them score. A tie is a tie, better than a loss, and we really showed we’re a different team from last game.”
