Merrill– The Wisconsin Rapids boys soccer team battled the Merrill Blue Jays to a 2-2 tie in 2 overtimes on Thursday night in Merrill.
Thursday’s contest represented the second consecutive double overtime game that the Red Raiders have played, the last one a 1-0 win over Wausau West last week.
Merrill struck first on a break away goal, but Rapids’ David Fickey responded quickly thereafter to even the score at 1-1.
Merrill scored again before halftime to take a 2-1 lead and, despite several opportunities, Rapids was unable to put another goal on the board until freshman Austin Schulze banged home a goal off an assist from Seth Surendonk.
After two overtimes, the score remained knotted, 2-2.
“We were doing great things up top and had possession the entire game, but we, again, couldn’t find the back of the net,” said Rapids’ Matt Hepp. “It was a game we definitely had our opportunities to win and we should have taken advantage of them better, but that’s something we will have to work on.”
There is little time for Rapids to dwell on the tie as the Red Raiders enter a grueling stretch in which they will have to play five games in six days.
