Stevens Point– On a cold, wet Saturday morning the 5/6 Heavyweight Lions met Fahrner in a hard-fought battle on the football field at the Portage County Soccer Complex. The Lions were shorthanded all day, starting the game with only 12 players and then losing Richard Makuski during the game. The Lions were forced to play with 11 and sometimes only 10 players due to other minor injuries. Both teams showed fierce defenses throughout the game. The Lions were led on defense by Austin Stankowski with 10 tackles and a fumble recovery. Desmond Schommer, Jaylen Gassman and Braden Christophersen had 7 tackles each, while Christophersen also added 2 sacks and caused a fumble. Offensively, 6 Lions combined on 26 carries for 104 yards, paced by Kristoffer Ysquidero’s 40 yards rushing and his 60 yard touchdown reception on a beautiful throw from quarterback Jackson Gutzdorf. Ysquidero also made a fantastic special teams play ripping the ball out of the Fahrner punt returners hands near the sideline and taking it in for a long 60 yard touchdown run. Stankowski and Ysquidero were the Lions Powerade players of the game.
Later in the morning the 5/6 lightweight Orange Crush dug deep into the trenches battling a hard-fought game that the boys played well throughout. The teams were about as even as could be designed and the battle of field position went back and forth throughout the game. The Orange Crush was highlighted by Evan Thomas who ran the ball into the end zone not once but twice to earn him Mr. Offense honors. Also getting a score was Joe Berquist. The Hitman award went to Antonio Cruz. Alex Jurgella received the Coach’s award and Justin Groshek took the 100% trophy home for the week.
On Monday night the 3/4 lightweight Moose played under the lights against the younger Orange Crush team. Leading the way on offense was Bennet Ksicinski and Ben Raczek. Making a fumble recovery along with several tackles was Cade Stankowski.
