Auburndale– The Auburndale Apaches took care of business on Friday night against Chequamegon, cruising to a 41-20 win. Don’t look now, but the Apaches have quietly ascended the Marawood Conference football standings. Sitting at 3-1 in the Marawood and 3-1 overall, Auburndale has found a comfortable spot in the standings directly behind Stratford and Edgar, both of whom sport a spotless 3-0 conference record.
Auburndale got off to a quick start Friday night, scoring 13 points in the first quarter while only giving up 6. Chequamegon played the Apaches even in the scoring column through the second and third quarters, respectively, but Auburndale pulled ahead with 14 unanswered points in the final frame to preserve the win.
Apaches’ quarterback Blake Anderson was stellar once again, uncorking a 20 yard touchdown pass to Matthew Nikolay and a 52 yard touchdown pass to Austin Hawkins. Anderson and Hawkins connected yet again on a 38 yard bomb, good for a touchdown. And, to cap it off, Anderson scored on a one yard touchdown scamper.
Auburndale’s Canyon Weiler and Trevin Oertel each rumbled for one yard touchdowns to round out the scoring for the Apaches.
In all, Anderson completed 10 of 14 passes for 193 yards. Hawkins led the Apaches with 114 receiving yards. Wyatt Weiler rushed nine times for 69 yards.
Auburndale has a good chance to improve to 4-1 next week as they host Phillips. The Loggers are still searching for their first win this season and are 0-4 in conference play.
