Pittsville– The Pittsville Panthers were shut out by Marathon in week one of Marawood Conference action. The Panthers’ offense, led by a jaw-dropping performance by David Sojka, took their frustrations out the Tomahawk Hatchets on Friday night as they won, 50-21.
Sojka threw for five touchdowns and rushed for one in the Panthers’ rout of the Hatchets.
The incredible performance of Sojka was preceeded by Pittsville senior running back Eric Hahn’s 32 yard touchdown on the first play of the game.
After Hahn’s touchdown, it was the David Sojka show. His first touchdown strike was to Nathan Dupee, a 43 yard touchdown strike, in the first quarter to put the Panthers up 14-0.
The 14-point first quarter scoring outburst was a welcome sight for Panther fans and a sign of things to come.
Tomahawk– which took a tough, 2 overtime loss to Auburndale in its first game of the season– responded with a 7-yard touchdown run from Jake Borchard, and the score stood at 14-7 after one quarter of play.
Tomahawk scored again in the second period when Borchard again found the end zone, this time for a 3-yard touchdown run.
Pittsville answered with just over two minutes in the first half when Sojka connected with Hahn on a 64-yard touchdown pass to give Pittsville a 20-14 lead.
Sojka, who was laser sharp all night, found wide receiver Sawyer Ladick for a 7-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter to give Pittsville a 28-14 lead. But he didn’t stop there. Sojka scored next on a 24 yard run with just over 10 minutes left in the game. He tossed for yet another touchdown with 10:51 in the fourth to put Pittsville up 43-21.
Sojka’s fifth– and final– passing strike came late in the fourth to give Pittsville the 50-21 win.
It was a masterful performance by the Panthers’ quarterback against a talented Marawood foe. Pittsville improves to 1-1 on the season, while Tomahawk falls to 0-2 on the season and is still looking for its first win since joining the Marawood Conference in 2011.
