I first met New York native John Spaine, owner of Dead Ringer Sights (deadringerhunting.com) at the 2012 Wisconsin Deer & Turkey Expo.
The name sounded familiar and the fantastic expo display drew me in. He took the time to talk to me, he asked me what I was about and I told him I was an outdoor writer, and because he’s a smart business owner he offered me a Dead Ringer Beard Buster to put on my shotgun for the upcoming turkey season in exchange for a review.
I let him know I was an honest writer and didn’t sugar coat anything, he said “we’ll get along just fine then”.
I didn’t get to use it during turkey season. I only have a 20 gauge and I let someone convince me that you could only hunt turkeys with a 12 gauge.
A statement I found out was utterly untrue. But I had already taken both my turkeys by then.
Don’t get me wrong however; I still put it on my shotgun. The first thing I noticed was how bright the light pipes were.
I had my shotgun laid out on my kitchen table, it was late afternoon and our kitchen faces East, while it wasn’t quite dark it was that late afternoon shade; reminiscent of dusk in the kitchen. Those light pipes grabbed all available light around them and stood out against the oak table.
Made out of Optical Lexan (the same material used in making bullet proof glass), the fluorescent dyes worked wonders.
The sight was a piece of cake to put on the shotgun, I think it took all of 2 minutes.
The end of the light pipe had a little extended knock and it fit into the sight housing like a key fits into a lock, insert, twist and done.
I had a choice of green or orange and I went with orange, no real technical reason why other than I like orange.
The package brought up a point that seriously had me lamenting the fact that I wasn’t able to take advantage of it during turkey season.
The sight is obviously designed with the turkey hunter in mind, not because of the name, but because when looking down the barrel, the circular orange ring will help you gauge distance. If the turkeys head and neck fills inside the ring; you know the turkey is 30-35 yards away.
Once I had the sight on the shotgun it was time to go play with it.
Having just received some fun Darkotic zombie targets from Birchwood Casey I headed out to my gun club.
It performed wonderfully.
My top rated point was that I was able to shoot with both eyes open, I hate closing one eye, it makes me nervous. I like being able to use my peripheral vision and be aware of what’s going on around me so being able to use both eyes is a definite plus.
For the spider target I aimed for the spot right between the eyes.
The zombie took a few extra shots, I aimed for various parts of the body, the bow tie, the left handed hook, the hand with the cleaver in it.
I was having so much fun my husband even gave it a shot; he’d never shot a shotgun before and found aiming through the sight a breeze.
The Dead Ringer Beard Buster retails for around $23.95, a serious value for the quality of the sight. If you visit their website you will see they offer a wide variety of sight options for all sort of bird hunting, as well as two red dot sights.
Hopefully I can bag a turkey this fall; and if I do it will be because I have the right equipment at my disposal!
