Stevens Point–The SPYBA 11u Pointer team traveled to Dodgeville last weekend for the state tournament. Although the state tournament is supposed to be the premier tournament of the season, the playing accommodations were far from it. The coaches could have mowed down a hayfield, put out bases and had parents sell freezy pops out of the back of their vehicles and it would have been a better environment.
The boys came out flat on Friday night losing to eventual champion Green Bay. Although the boys defeated Green Bay, the week before in Pulaski, the tables would be turned here at state. The Pointers were winning 3-0 by a strong pitching performance by Cole Wright. The defensive left the team and Green Bay scored four runs in one inning to take the eventual winning lead. Justin Morton came into pitch and shut the Green Bay team down through six. Leading the way in hitting were Austin Stankowski and Cole Wright with a triple.
This put the Pointers into a tough situation having to fight out of their bracket. They would play against Mount Horeb Sunday morning. The Pointers “10 runned” Mount Horeb in five innings by a score of 12-0. The winning pitcher was Legend Kieleszewski.
The Pointers went onto play the Escanaba Bears. Coming out flat, the boys could not put the Bears away and let them stick around. Fortunately, Cole Wright came out and in “Francisco Rodriguez style” shut the Bears down with runners on base. They won 3-2. The winning pitcher was Justin Morton.
This let them stick around another night to play against Middleton. The Middleton team took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning off of Kieleszewski. The Pointers would make a strong comeback behind Stankowski who had a 2 RBI double to put the Pointers up 3-2. Stankowski added another RBI single as did Kieleszweski to give the team a 5-2 lead heading into the 5th. In the 5th, Middleton would tack on two more runs to make if 5-4. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Middleton led off with an inside the park solo home run and chipped away to take the game and send the Pointers home by a score of 6-5. Stankowski lead the team over the weekend with 7 hits, followed by Justin Morton with six, and Wright and Jacob Danielsen with 5 apiece.
The Pointers finished the season with a 15-9 record.
