Rapids summer football camp opened Tuesday.
Wisconsin Rapids–The Lincoln Red Raiders are coming off their second state title appearance under head coach Tony Biolo. Questions abound this year. Who will replace student athletes like Brady Goska, Vince Biegel, and Sam Delaney? Who is going to run the option this season? How do you replace the now-graduated seniors? Well it all started today at the practice field at Lincoln High.
“Today was about learning your spot. Seeing how the the players fit together. As a coaching staff we were very pleased with the first day of camp. Everyone was playing agressive, and that is what you like to see,” said Coach Hepp.
It was a gorgeous day, as over 90 student athletes attended the first day of football camp. Most impressive was the amount of 9th graders that turned out to learn football, which is a great sign for a high school football program.
“It was a great day. We had a great turnout. What was most impressive about today was the amount of kids that showed up to workout in the morning, went home for lunch and came back for camp,” said Biolo.
It promises to be another exciting season for the Big Red who will get most of their work in this summer before school even starts. I would keep your eye on Hayden Biegel, who looks absolutely huge, and ready to lead. Another player who has been putting in a lot of extra time is Zach Bassuener who is fast, getting faster, and ready to keep the defense at the level it was last season. Do not count out Garrett O’Neill who, despite his facial hair, seens mature enough to grow into a senior leader.
“This season it’s all about learning the system and teaching the younger players the system. I am ready,” said O’Neill.
The season is a ways away, but it is never to early to start thinking football.
